Bringing the Outback to Hospital Patients Through Virtual Reality
The Chimera Legacy Foundation is proud to support Damien Thompson as he embarks on an extraordinary journey across Australia—the Great Australian Outback Tour.
Damien has set out to capture the raw beauty of our vast and remote landscapes in a way few people have ever experienced: 360-degree virtual reality films. These immersive videos will be gifted to patients undergoing life-saving treatment in hospital, giving them a much needed escape into the wilderness when they need it most.
Imagine lying in a hospital bed, unable to leave, yet suddenly finding yourself standing on a red desert plain at sunset, walking through lush gorges, or gazing at the endless ocean off Australia’s rugged coast. This is the vision behind the Holiday from Hospital program—to bring joy, calm, and adventure to those who cannot travel.
The Journey
Over the course of three months, Damien will travel thousands of kilometres through the beating heart of the outback and along our rugged coastlines. His route will take him across some of Australia’s most iconic and remote regions:
Cairns → Darwin
Darwin → Broome
Broome → Exmouth
Exmouth → Perth
Perth → Port Augusta
Port Augusta → Alice Springs
Alice Springs → Townsville
Along the way, he will film virtual reality experiences in places where few people ever set foot—transforming them into a gift of wonder and comfort for patients in hospital wards.
